About The Rhode Island Early Learning Standards

RI Early Learning StandardsThe Rhode Island Early Learning Standards are guidelines – for parents, teachers and administrators – establishing what children should know and be able to do as they enter kindergarten. They are intended to help educators and administrators in the development of curriculum and instruction, and to give parents a clearer understanding of the skills typically needed for a successful start in school.

In 2003, Ready to Learn Providence, Dorcas Place Adult and Family Learning Center, and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) joined forces to pilot the Early Learning Standards in Providence, offering an eight-month training program on how to incorporate the standards in early childhood programs. The 15 participants included family child-care and center-based providers, Providence Head Start teachers, parents and public school teachers. Participants received supportive feedback from the group while introducing the standards into their programs and curricula.

The RI Early Learning Standards are divided into eight domains:

  • Approaches to Learning
  • Social and Emotional Development
  • Language Development and Communication
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Creativity
  • Physical Health and Development

The Early Learning Standards reflect RIDE’s strong belief in the importance of play in the learning of skills, knowledge and dispositions that guarantee success in later schooling.

According to RIDE, the Early Learning Standards are not intended to be used to:

  • Assess the competence of young children
  • Mandate specific teaching practices or materials
  • Determine rewards or penalties for educational personnel
  • Prohibit children from entering kindergarten
  • Exclude groups of children because of disabilities or home language

Ready to Learn Providence strongly encourages all early-care and education providers in Providence to learn more about the Rhode Island Early Learning Standards by visiting the Rhode Island Department of Education website at http://www.ride.ri.gov/els/doc.asp  The Early Learning Standards are also available in Spanish. Also on the website are some fun activities that parents and educators can work on with preschoolers to prepare them for kindergarten.
