About The Rhode Island Early Learning Standards
In 2003, Ready to Learn Providence, Dorcas Place Adult and Family Learning Center, and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) joined forces to pilot the Early Learning Standards in Providence, offering an eight-month training program on how to incorporate the standards in early childhood programs. The 15 participants included family child-care and center-based providers, Providence Head Start teachers, parents and public school teachers. Participants received supportive feedback from the group while introducing the standards into their programs and curricula.
The Early Learning Standards reflect RIDE’s strong belief in the importance of play in the learning of skills, knowledge and dispositions that guarantee success in later schooling. According to RIDE, the Early Learning Standards are not intended to be used to:

The Rhode Island Early Learning Standards are guidelines – for parents, teachers and administrators – establishing what children should know and be able to do as they enter kindergarten. They are intended to help educators and administrators in the development of curriculum and instruction, and to give parents a clearer understanding of the skills typically needed for a successful start in school.
