In April 2005 the R2LP Professional Development Committee surveyed every early learning program in Providence to determine what assessment tools and methods are used in their programs. The goal of this survey was to inform the work of the Professional Development Committee as they plan a series of trainings on assessment that respond to the needs of community. Twenty-five responses were received representing 47% of programs surveyed.
Every program that responded to the survey indicated that they use assessments in their program and find them useful. The most widely used assessment resource, selected by 45% of respondents, is the Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3 to 5. Respondents indicated that they would like to see ongoing investments in Creative Curriculum training by R2LP.
Centers were asked to rank their priorities for assessment training and support that R2LP might be able to provide to support child-care providers. The top three training requests were social and emotional development (59%), teacher observations (49%) and literacy skills (31%). Training to support each topic area has already begun or is in development.
Additional feedback from respondents about what they would like to learn about assessment included: ideas for incorporating assessments into busy classroom schedules; conducting observations in relation to the Rhode Island Early Learning Standards; understanding the cycle of assessment, and balancing the structural rigor of assessment with individual teacher strengths.
