Creating healthy and happy young children
We all know a healthy child is more likely to succeed and flourish in school. All of our programs stress the critical role that physical and emotional health plays in school readiness.
One course, Mind in the Making: The Science of Early Learning, examines the physical, emotional and intellectual development of young children in depth. We offer this 12-session course – in English and Spanish – to educators as funding allows. It was developed by the Families and Work Institute.
In the winter of 2013, we began offering The Incredible Years to parents, caregivers and home child-care providers. This 14-week program increases the social competence of children and reduces challenging behaviors.
We began offering I Am Moving, I Am Learning to center- and home-based providers in 2013. Head Start developed this program to stem childhood obesity. All of our AmeriCorps members have been trained in I Am Moving, I Am Learning, and have helped providers in child-care settings integrate it into their programs.
R2LP also partners with Lifespan, the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island, the R.I. Department of Health and the R.I. Department of Transportation for health-related training programs that we offer AmeriCorps members and family child-care providers.
